Two sumo wrestlers and a referee, silhouetted by a red sun-like orb. Yeah, that looks like the Japanese flag, I know. This was digitally synthesized from an illustration in a 1907 newspaper (thus totally public domain). The red circle was added for focus. The original article was informative but clogged with racial epitaphs of the day, and so it will not be quoted. None the less, enjoy this sumo-goodness 繪圖 日本 相撲 兩個相撲 & 裁判
So I realize the this is oddly drawn. But it's how the original 1859 drawing I synthesized was proportioned so I thought I would just follow the original. It has an interesting feel to it, I think. Go , fight hard mister sumo wrestlers 日本 文化 相撲 去去相撲相撲-1859年

In my never ending quest to fill all the missing gaps in openclipart.org clipart coverage, I'm providing a clipart image to symbolize the Japanese festival of 'moon viewing'. It's a little early, that's done in autumn, but I thought early was better than late. Symbols of this event include the 'tsukimi dango' (round circle rice dumpling) and 'susuki grass' (that's in the vase in this clipart) ... you better have your moon-viewing party soon 月亮 查看 moon-viewing Moon Viewing - Tsukimi

One of the many symbols of summer here in Japan: Kakigori. It's basically what I guess is called shaved ice. Ice flakes with syrup flavoring on it. A rather simple summer snack I guess but it's great during a hot day! The Chinese character on this cup (and many cups you get at a festival or convenience store) says 'ice' and it is a bit shredded on purpose 夏季 日本 刨冰 Kakigori - Shaved Ice

This is an old, and quite big, Buddha statue green like the Statue of Liberty. It is located in Kamakura, and it is quite a tourist spot. If you are in the area, it is a fun day trip though. The whole area is quite fun. The circle above the Buddha is the chrysanthemum symbol of the emperor 偉大的佛陀 日本 鐮倉 鐮倉
In Japan during the summer, a stage is often set up and a taiko drummer beats out a rhythm as kimono-clad dancers (usually old ladies) dance in a circle. Because this always happens in the summer, I guess it is a symbol of summer. It happens around the Obon holidays. I thought we should have some clipart to represent that on openclipart.org so I made this one here 奧邦 bonodori 夏季 Bonodori-在日本的夏天
So I know summer is almost done and gone, but I was walking home the other day and I saw a hand drawn picture for this event. I thought, if they can draw something for an official event then I can draw one just like it and put it on openclipart to share this bit of culture! I'm not the best artist, but this should depict "suikawari" which is like how they play with pinatas in the land of the raising sun. Blindfold someone and then they try to smash the watermelon! Kind of traditional, but a whole lot of fun 日本 海灘 文化 夏季: Suikawari

This is Miyajima shrine gate (actually, I think it is really Itsukushima Shrine, but many people refer to it as Miyajima, especially in English.) The 'torii' gate is important to the Japanese native religion of Shinto. And it looks cool. This was hand drawn from a reference photo of a shrine near my current abode. The shrine in the photo was a basic gray cement torii, but I changed this one to red because I liked the impact of that. Hand drawn, so the balance is not perfect, but I hope it can be of use 日本 牌樓 文化 牌坊-神道門
In my quest to try to have at least one of every possible clipart needed by anyone uploaded to this openclipart.org site, I found a cool old public domain image of an Ainu man from the 1890s on Wikimedia and hand colourized it myself. After that I synthesized it as a vector image for the future. (If you don't know, the Ainu people are some of the aboriginal people of Japan.) 阿伊努人 文化 人民 日本的阿伊努人

I think I totally forgot to upload this one! I hand coloured this one myself awhile ago, from an old black and white depiction of sumo wrestling.
